OtherTown came very close to losing its clinic. This is what happened instead.
The clinic is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, eight to five. A physician and a nurse practitioner rotate out from Ruraltown, so you see the same two faces rather than whoever happened to be free that week.
Two days is not a lot, and we know it. It is what the numbers support in a town this size, and it is considerably more than nothing, which was the alternative.
What you can get here
Everyday primary care: checkups from infancy onward, immunizations, school and sports physicals, acute illness, and ongoing management of diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and thyroid problems. Blood draws happen here and go to the hospital laboratory the same day, so you are not making a second trip for results.
Minor things get handled in the room. Stitches, removing something off your skin that should not be there, a joint injection.
What you cannot, and where to go instead
No imaging, no surgery, no emergency care, and nobody here on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays or weekends.
If it is an emergency, call 911. The emergency department at Ruraltown Health Center is ten minutes north and staffed at every hour. Do not drive to this building hoping someone is in.
For anything that cannot wait until Tuesday or Thursday, Ruraltown Community Clinic is open weekdays and holds same day slots every morning. Anything needing an x-ray, a scan, a procedure or a specialist gets scheduled at the health center, and we book it before you leave rather than handing over a phone number.
How it became ours
Dr. Eugene Brubaker practiced in OtherTown for thirty eight years. By 2020 he was ready to retire, and the practice went up for sale into a market that did not want it. A town of nine hundred people cannot support an independent clinic, and a new graduate carrying medical school debt does not go where the numbers do not work. The realistic outcome was that the door closed and did not reopen.
Demonstration Healthcare acquired the practice in 2020. Not because it pencils out on its own, because it does not and was never going to. A clinic open two days a week in a town that size does not turn a profit.
It is worth doing anyway, for two reasons we are happy to say out loud. Nine hundred people keep a connection to primary care they would otherwise have lost, and when someone in OtherTown eventually needs a hospital, they come to ours. Both of those are true. Neither is a secret.
Getting here
South Kansas Avenue, in the low brick building with the green door. There is a Demonstration Healthcare sign out front now, though most of OtherTown still calls it Brubaker's.
About ten minutes from Ruraltown: south on Highway 14, then left at the co-op. Closed Monday, Wednesday, Friday and the weekend. If the door is locked, that is why, and the clinic in Ruraltown is ten minutes back up the road.
Parking
A small lot on the south side with room for about fifteen cars, including two accessible spaces by the door. Street parking on Kansas Avenue is free and nobody will bother you about it.
Accessibility
Single storey with a level entrance and an automatic door. Exam rooms and the restroom are wheelchair accessible. Interpretation, including sign language, is arranged at no cost with a day or two of notice.
