Cardiac rehabilitation expands to three mornings a week

Demand has outgrown the two morning schedule, so the program now runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Our cardiac rehabilitation program has moved from two mornings a week to three, effective this month. Sessions now run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The change comes down to demand. The program has been running at capacity since spring, with a waiting list that reached five weeks at one point. That is a real problem, because the benefit of cardiac rehabilitation depends heavily on starting soon after the event that put you there.

Cardiac rehabilitation is supervised exercise combined with education on medication, nutrition, and symptom recognition, for people recovering from a heart attack, bypass surgery, stent placement, or a diagnosis of heart failure. It measurably reduces the chance of a second event and of another hospital admission.

It is also one of the most underused proven treatments in medicine, and the reason is almost always distance. A program an hour away, three times a week, for twelve weeks, is a commitment most people quietly abandon by week three. Here it is a ten minute drive.

Medicare and most insurers cover the program after a qualifying event. Ask your provider for a referral, or call (620) 555-0142.
